I remembering having to read the over 400 page book, The Hot Zone by Richard Preston in the 7th grade. I don't know why the teacher chose that book back in 2000, but in 2014 I am glad that she did. I remember a decent amount from the book, but am considering reading it again. Whether you think the Ebola epidemic in the United States is a distraction or not; I don't think it'll hurt to know the ins and outs of the virus.
Richard Preston also has a book called, The Demon in the Freezer. This book talks about the eradication of smallpox in the U.S. The interesting part is that stockpiles were frozen, stored in 2 places on the earth, and some were lost. This leads many to believe that smallpox could be in the hands of terrorists and that someone could be trying to create a strain of the virus that is resistant to the vaccine.
