So, by now you have seen and heard of the devastation in North Carolina due to Hurricane Florence. I was raised and still live in Wilmington, North Carolina. I have survived and been through so many hurricanes. For this one, I decided to evacuate. I went to Greensboro. I thought we’d only be there for a few days. We were there for 8 days. Then we left and went to Warsaw, NC. We were trying to go home, but roads began flooding again and we were stopped by a road that was nearly gone. After a day in Warsaw, we finally made it home to Wilmington. Our electricity was just coming back on and we had a leaky roof. There is now mold in the closet and bathroom. My grandparents’ home, originally owned by my Great Grandparents, had the most damage. The ceiling in the kitchen and dining room had fallen and the roof was leaking. They also had black mold and asbestos. I will include photos of the damage to our home and theirs below. I have been helping my grandparents’ neighbors clean their yards and today I purchased cleaning supplies to give out to the elderly who are still in need. There are so many great organizations that are out here helping the community. Support the Port, ran by someone I know from high school, has been great about giving back to the low-income areas. Today I received two calls from people in a senior apartment place and others in Castle Hayne, NC saying that they felt forgotten. I was able to deliver supplies some in the senior apartments. I am raising money to buy food and supplies to giveaway at St. Joy Holiness Church in Wilmington, NC. The church is located and serves the elderly in low income communities.
