I am often asked how I lost my weight and how long did it take. Everyone is always looking for an easy answer to losing weight. There is none, at least not in my case. How did I lose the weight and get healthy? I exercised and changed the way I eat. My sister laughs because I never say I am on a "diet." I always say it's a "lifestyle." Diets are temporary and they never last long.
In August 2007 (age 19), while sitting in a Socology class, my teacher explained the process of making Vienna sausages and hot dogs. I went home and watched a video on YouTube called, "Meet Your Meat." I stopped eating pork and red meat that day. Now for some, it may not be easy to give up a food in one day. So, try giving up a little at a time. Afterwards, knowing that Diabetes runs in my family, I decreased my intake of sugar. Keep in mind that I gave up the pork, red meat, and sugar for health reasons, not for weight loss. However, each step played a positive roll in my future.
In October 2010 (age 22), I went to the Doctor and by the end of the visit I was told that my blood pressure was high and I weighed 213 pounds. I'm only 5'4, so this is considered obese. I was given a few brochures and told to lose the weight. I didn't really understand the severity of my blood pressure being high until my Aunt Angela died after having her third stroke in December 2011. This caused me to no longer cook with salt and to watch my sodium intake. Now let's rewind a bit. Now even after being told to lose weight by the Doctor, I didn't start until 9 months later in July 2011.
My meals consisted mostly of baked chicken, turkey, salads, quinoa, oatmeal, fruits, and vegetables. I began exercising 6 days a week. I spent an hour on the treadmill (in weight loss mode) each of those 6 days. Then I alternated 30 minute workouts after I finished on the treadmill. Some of the 30 minute workouts I did were Turbo Jam, Just Dance, Pump It Up, Kendell Hogan (Exercise TV), and doing pilates. It all depended on what I felt like doing that day and made it more fun to switch things up. By October 2011, I had lost 35 pounds. I continued to eat the same meals, but my exercise routine changed. I began to only exercise 5 days a week. Some days I would do a 20 minute advanced boxing workout (by Laila Ali & Sugar Ray Leonard), 45 minutes of Turbo Jam the next day, and other days a 45 minute workout called "Get Up and Dance" by Paula Abdul. By January 2012, I was 50 pounds down. So, it took me 6 months to lose 50 pounds. Fast forward to June 2012, I became a Vegan. This was done for health reasons, not weight loss.
Keep in mind that everyone's weight loss story is different. Some people will lose weight quicker or slower than others and that's okay. The key is to get healthy. I hope my story inspires people to lose weight and get healthy. Find what works for you.
